Historical Context:  II man-about-towns 2:14-17 was written by capital of Minnesota to the church at Corinth in the first century.  The historical context of the city is important as we look at the text because it provides a intermit placement of the context in which capital of Minnesota wrote and gives contemporary readers a better understanding of the audience to which he wrote.  During the time capital of Minnesota wrote this letter, Corinth (located in Greece) was the center of trade for Asia, Egypt and Europe. The city of Corinth flourished with a number of civil buildings and the city was very advanced for its time. Corinth was a wealthy and known city.[i] The infamous Pan-Hellenic and Isthmian games were held in Corinth. In 44 B.C.E. this prestigious city became a Roman colony.[ii]  Corinth had many characteristics and practices ordinary to many areas of the Greco-Roman world, including pagan worship. However, Corinth was different from other geographical locations in that the city was not only notorious for its wealth but it was also for its immorality.



[iii] This is the world in which Paul lived and the nation to whom Paul preached. Paul visited Corinth for the first time in 51 or 52 A.D.[iv]  While there, he organized the Corinthian church and he remained in Corinth a year and 6 months (Acts 18). While physically absent from the church at Corinth, Paul corresponded with them through a series of letters.
